The Academic Staff Union of Universities has received from the federal government the first part of the check-off dues for November 2022 that were withheld from the paychecks of all academics employed by federal universities nationwide.
Numerous media outlets had previously reported expressly on how the Ministry of Labour and Employment withheld the union’s check-off dues.
Olajide Oshundun, the ministry’s spokesman, claimed in an interview that the government’s choice was based on ASUU’s failure to deliver its audit findings.
Check-off dues are the sums withheld from an employee’s pay in exchange for their membership in a union or other group that advocates for employees in a given sector.
The government repaid half of the money withheld from members’ wages after the reports, according to Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin, chair of ASUU at Federal University of Technology in Minna, who spoke to journalists on Sunday.
“After the reports, the union received a notification informing us of the receipt of the check-off dues,” he stated. We did not, however, observe that we were fully compensated. Instead, we only got a portion of what was owed to us.
“The government deducted the full amount from our members’ salaries, which is the amusing part. Where is the remaining check-off dues, is our current query to them.
