Iconic Nigerian singer, Ayra Starr, has achieved a historic milestone on June 4, 2024, by overthinking South African singer, Tyla, to become the African artist with the most monthly listeners on Spotify.

While Tyla had 31,223,494 monthly Spotify listeners as of the time the story was posted, Ayra Starr had 31,406,881 monthly listeners. Through her most recent achievement, Ayra Starr has become the first African artist to have the most monthly Spotify listeners, surpassing the likes of Wizkid, CKay, Burna Boy, Tems, and Rema.

African record-breaking 30 million monthly listeners were attracted to CKay during the height of his worldwide smash tune “Love Nwantiti” in 2021. Likewise, in 2023, during the pinnacle of his world-renowned song “Calm Down,” Rema attained 34 million monthly listeners on Spotify, making him the African artist with the highest number of monthly listeners.

The success of new albums greatly influences the number of Spotify monthly listeners, and Ayra Starr’s most recent achievement can be attributed to the publication of her second album, “The Year I Turned 21.” The 15-track album has received positive reviews from critics and includes guest appearances by Seyi Vibez, Asake, Giveon, Coco Jones, Anitta, and Milar.

A testament to her stature as one of Africa’s top performers, the album broke the record for the most Spotify streams on its first day for an album by a female Nigerian musician.
