Driver Reported Dead As Car Crashes Off Shopping Centre Parkade Top Floor

In Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, an elderly man lost his life when his car slammed out of a parking lot into the street below. On Thursday, an SUV crashed through a wall at the Atrium parkade in Overport, Durban, causing emergency personnel to respond. ALS Paramedics’ Garrith Jamieson said that they were dispatched to the site just after 12:30 p.m. Police were on the site, according to paramedics, to look into what caused the collision.

The car, a navy VW T-Cross that had fallen from the building’s third story onto its roof, trapped its driver.

Jamieson said,

“A single occupant was trapped. He showed no signs of life,”

“The driver, and only occupant of the vehicle, was found severely entrapped in the wreckage with major injuries. Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for the man. He was declared deceased on the scene. The man is believed to be in his seventies,”

A lone car on the top floor of the shopping center’s parking lot lost control inexplicably, crashing through the wall and landing on the road below on its roof. Jaws-of-life tools were utilized by the eThekwini fire and search and rescue teams to free the driver who was trapped. Some media outlets claim that this is a developing story, as inquiries into the specifics of what happened are ongoing.
