Joburg Residents Affected By Water Shortages

Many in the western part of Johannesburg don’t have enough water and have taken social media and other forms to express their need. This is because Rand Water is doing some work on the Eikenhof Pumpstation. The areas affected include Witpootrtjie, Grobler Park, and Kagiso. People in Randburg, Roodepoort, Sandton, Midrand, Soweto, Lenasia, Ennerdale, and Orange Farm might also have water problems. When residents went to the water tankers in the morning, they found them empty.

Lungile Khumalo, a resident of Grobler Park, found herself in a difficult situation when she went without water from Tuesday onwards. She shared that the water tanker in her area used to be refilled daily at midday. However, upon returning from work at 6pm on Wednesday, she was dismayed to find the tanker completely dry, with no sign of water being replenished after that. When Sowetan caught up with her on Thursday afternoon, Khumalo was spotted at the Witpoortjie Shopping Complex, patiently waiting in line with two buckets and a bottle, hoping for the empty water tanker to be filled.

“We are waiting in a queue for only one tank to supply us with water for our homes. This is not going to be enough for all of us,”

“We haven’t had water since Tuesday morning and today is Thursday and still there’s nothing. When I knocked off from work on Wednesday I found the tank already empty and I didn’t have other alternatives,”

Residents reported waiting all day for the water tank to be filled, only to find it empty by around 6 pm. Tiyani Maswanganyi, a resident of Grobler Park, described feeling the initial impact on Wednesday when he had access to water with low pressure. However, the following day, he experienced the full force of the issue when he had no water. Additionally, residents expressed dissatisfaction with the size of the water tank, stating that it was insufficient to meet the entire community’s water needs.
