Khuli Chana hails SA rap icons in chronicled doccie

Khuli Chana, a respected figure in South African hip-hop, has taken it upon himself to safeguard the genre’s legacy and ensure that the contributions of rap legends like the late AKA and Riky Rick are eternally remembered. Recently, the 41-year-old musician held a special screening event for his latest documentary, “Maftown Heights Untold Stories,” in the vibrant district of Rosebank, Johannesburg.

This compelling documentary delves deep into the lives and careers of some of the most influential Mzansi hip-hop artists. Known for his unique sonic palette and distinctive approach, Chana has forged musical alliances with various talents, including Cassper Nyovest and AKA. Adding to his captivating personal narrative is his marriage to the popular personality Lamiez Holworthy.

The documentary will air on Saturday on Channel O, and new episodes will be released weekly. Khulane Morule, a trailblazer in the local hip-hop subculture motswako, will serve as an executive producer alongside Refiloe Ramogase. Khulane Morule was born in Mmabatho, North West.

He said,

“Africa’s diverse cultures and traditions are at risk of being diluted or lost in the face of globalisation. By telling our own stories, we maintain a direct connection to our roots, passing on the essence of our identity to future generations,”

“It’s so beautiful to watch how SA hip-hop is redefining and cementing itself in the global scene.”

Ramogase said,

“Maftown Heights Untold Stories has been in the works since 2020. It’s been a labour of love and a celebration of the cultural tapestry that has shaped the South African music scene,”

“We aim to honour the legacy of the artists who have inspired a generation [some of whom are no longer with us] , and to provide a platform for their voices to be heard in an authentic and compelling manner.

“We believe it will resonate with long-time fans and newcomers alike, providing a deeper understanding of the festival’s significance and its role in the broader cultural landscape.”
