Pendo Masote was excited to join an orchestra group, and now his passion is taking him to perform on world stages. He learned about the orchestra group while being a fellow of the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra, the main organization behind the AUYO project, spearheaded by Bongani Tembe. Masote and other members of the Africa United Youth Orchestra (AUYO) are getting ready to perform in New York in August.
“I look forward to collaborating with renowned conductors, soloists and musicians and strengthening bonds and camaraderie among orchestra members. This experience will connect me with fellow musicians, industry professionals and potential mentors. I am glad and eager to be part of the experience.
A talented group of young musicians from diverse African nations, including Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, eagerly prepares for their upcoming performance at the renowned Carnegie Hall during the World Orchestra Week festival, scheduled for August 1. One of the members, a 20-year-old from Johannesburg, fondly recalls his first orchestral experience at eight and views this upcoming opportunity as a significant privilege. He is enthusiastic about gaining valuable insights and knowledge during the tour. During his audition, he was tasked with preparing a 3-5 minute musical piece, either solo or accompanied, as well as several challenging orchestral excerpts, one of which is from Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, a piece they are set to perform during their tour to New York. He also mentioned that he had previously auditioned for the Muson/MTNF diploma in a music scholarship programme in 2018.
“I was awarded a scholarship to study music and violin performance under the tutelage of Mr Kenny Davids. After my diploma studies, I played with the most well-known community orchestra in Nigeria, the Muson Symphony Orchestra, THO Orchestra, Divine Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Music Nigeria.“
