PJ Morton Releases His Star-Packed Album “Cape Town To Cairo,” Which Features Fireboy DML, Mádé Kuti, Asa, And Others

With contributions from Fireboy DML, Mádé Kuti, Asa, Ndabo Zulu, and Soweto Spiritual Singer, PJ Morton debuted his Cape Town to Cairo album, which was recorded over the course of a 30-day trip across Africa.

The release of his record, an unmatched endeavor that transports listeners from Cape Town to Cairo, marks the beginning of PJ Morton’s musical trip. Comparable to Paul Simon’s classic albums, this one is considered Morton’s Graceland, however the five-time GRAMMY winner spent a full 30 days traveling across Africa recording the entire LP.

He came to the continent last fall with no music, lyrics, or preconceived notions—just a crazy idea to create a record in a month—and a goal to become fully immersed in as many diverse villages, cultures, and tales as he could. Thinking back on his journey, which took him from Cape Town and Johannesburg to Lagos, Nigeria; Accra, Ghana; Cairo, Egypt; and back to South Africa, the majority of which he was seeing for the first time.

With his own live band, local musicians, producers like P.Priime and The Cavemen, and featured artists like Fireboy DML, Mádé Kuti, Asa, Ndabo Zulu, and Soweto Spiritual Singers, PJ Morton uses music as his biggest common language from Cape Town to Cairo.
