Rare Bob Dylan Painting Sold For Almost $200K At Auction

Bob Dylan composed an uncommon abstract picture more than 50 years ago, and it recently sold for a very respectable amount.

The iconic rock star’s 1968 artwork brought in $196,156 at auction, as reported by RR Auction in a press release on Friday, May 24, which also happened to be Dylan’s 83rd birthday. The artist painted this piece while he was staying in Woodstock, New York, and working with The Band.

The recordings were subsequently made available on two compilation albums: The Basement Tapes (1975) and The Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete (2014). The painting had been in Dylan’s family until it was recently rediscovered in her previous husband, Anthony Lepanto’s estate, the auction house claims.

Dylan offered the painting to Sandy LePanto, a resident of the Woodstock region, in exchange for an astrological chart. Apart from his renowned songs, Dylan is well-known for his displayed artwork. His artwork was included on the cover of The Band’s 1968 self-titled first album, Music from Big Pink. His 1970 double album Self-Portrait also featured pieces of his artwork.

As part of the 2024 Outlaw Music Festival, Dylan is presently touring this summer alongside Willie Nelson, Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, and John Mellencamp.
