Sacha Pays Tribute To His Anti-Apartheid Hero Grandpa

After debuting for the national team last weekend, Springbok player Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu paid tribute to his paternal grandfather, anti-Apartheid activist Barry Feinberg. Sacha was one of several new faces in the squad that secured a 41-13 victory against Wales in Twickenham. In a tweet, he dedicated his stellar performance to his late grandfather, saying, “Hope I made you proud, Grandpa,” alongside a link to an article about Feinberg, who passed away last year.

Feinberg, a distinguished artist, poet, and author, was pivotal in creating publicity materials for the anti-Apartheid movement. He designed the early ANC and Umkhonto weSizwe logos and spent 30 years in exile during apartheid, where he fathered his son Nick, the father of Sacha Feinberg-Mgomezulu.

Nick Feinberg, Sacha’s father, is a radio personality for Heart FM who was born in Britain and moved back to South Africa in the 1990s. He became friends with Makhosazana Mngomezulu, an advocate who gave birth to his kids Nathan and Sacha. In the meantime, 39 players, including Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, have been named by Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus’s team to play Ireland in the upcoming two test series. One of the Boks’ fiercest opponents will meet them on July 6 at Loftus Versfeld and July 13 at Hollywoodbets Kings Park, respectively.

Rassie said in a statement:

“We named the best squad available for the Castle Incoming Series, and with squad depth being one of our key pillars as we build toward to the 2027 Rugby World Cup and the Test against Portugal, we thought it would be beneficial to us to name a standby squad with a few players who will join us at training sporadically in the next few weeks”.
