Stellenbosch Man Talks About Wife’s Death In Gang-related Crossfire

Stellenbosch man whose wife died in a gang-related crossfire opens up about it.

According to a recent report by SowetanLIVE, a Stellenbosch woman, identified as Harlene Meyer, was shot dead while walking to work. Meyer, a sister of former Proteas cricketer Roger Telemachus, was reported to have been caught in a gang crossfire. Her family was devastated when they found her body lying near a pavement and covered with a blanket.

The 49-year-old had a cleaning job which she was going to on Wednesday morning when she was shot while crossing Pine Street in Cloetesville. Her husband, Lionel Meyer opened up about his wife dead saying he never thought he would lose her when he kissed her goodbye before heading to work that day.

In a comment to TimesLIVE, he said they had shared a motivational message for the day before he left for work at 7am.

“I kissed her goodbye, went to put on deodorant and returned to kiss her goodbye again. She told me to enjoy my day, which she says every time we say goodbye. Before I left, I told her the apostle Paul tells us t we should not be people without hope but be people with hope. That was my message for the day for her. That was my last message to her.”

He was in a meeting at work when he was called around 8:30am that his wife had been shot. Thinking she sustained minor injuries, he got home and his mother told him that she was dead. He rushed to the hospital to confirm the news with hopes that it wasn’t true.

“It was surreal. I hoped I was having a nightmare. How could it be that she was struck? How could it happen to her?” Said Meyer.

He says he broke down when the pathologist and forensic team lifted the blanket to take pictures and he saw his wife’s clothes.
