Angie Motshekga gets criticized and ridiculed after being appointed the new Minister of Defence.
Mzansi is still talking about President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet reveal and some appointments have made people shake their heads in disbelief. Everyone was shocked when Angie Motshekga was appointed as the new Minister of Defence.
According to IOL, her appointment has ignited a fierce storm of reactions from South Africans on X. Some went as far as calling for the long-time education minister to call it a day and retire. According to reports, Ramaphosa’s new cabinet includes the ministers from the ANC, DA, IFP, PA, FF+, PAC and Good, all in the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Motshekga was moved from the Basic Education Ministry for the first time since 2009, and replaced Thandi Modise as Minister of Defence and Military Veterans. This has stirred up controversy all over social media and some have questioned her ability to do the job since she only has a solid educational background.
According to a tweet by @i_r_b_r_m, if Angie can complete and pass a week’s basic training at the elite training unit of the SANDF, then they would be convinced that she can do the job.
However, some loved the move to appoint her. Journalist Mzilikazi wa Afrika didn’t have a problem with it, but she stated that being a Defence Minister at her age could be discouraging to the SANDF Generals.

I have nothing against Mama Angie Motshekga but being a defence minister at 69-years-old and taking over from a 64-year-old Thandi Modise must be demoralising to some of the SANDF generals. #Cabinetpic.twitter.com/HCTpTPbqlm
